This is a song I wrote and recorded back in the spring of 1984. I played the instruments myself, using a four-track recorder and an antique rhythm machine. The sneezing was spontaneously recorded on a separate track whenever my nose started to itch.
As for the importance of this song in regard to hay fever as a major topic in pop songs such as “Keep on Running” by the Spencer Davis Group, Dylan’s “Blowing in the Wind”, etc, go to my youtube video “Keep on Running: Hay Fever in Pop Songs”:
NOTE: In contrast to what some self-appointed sociolinguists want us to believe, “Thar she blows!” is not a whaling expression. Actually, it was coined by Bjoern Weizenkeim, a retired German rock musician and hay fever victim from Brochterbeck, during a severe sneezing fit. His English was somewhat limited, which is why he used the word “she” – in German a nose is actually a female noun (“die” Nase).

In years past, food allergies weren’t just about as abundant as they are today. Today, many kids and adults have quite serious food allergies. Some have one food allergy and others have many. Folks have allergies to specific items, like strawberries, as well as broad items, like gluten. Sadly, there are many food allergies that are dangerous and even probably deadly to kids. These are some tactics that youngsters are influenced by their food allergies.
At School
Children with food allergies are influenced much so in their schools. If a child has a food allergy to peanuts, this may be a life threatening condition. Years back, the child was simply made to handle this on his or her own. Because such food allergies have been growing in power in the current years, some colleges have made the extreme and very tough effort to become totally peanut free schools.
These faculties don’t sell items that contain peanuts, they don’t make peanut items in their refrectory, and they don’t allow other students to bring in food items that contain peanuts. While this could appear extreme and tough to non allergic scholars, scholars with a food allergy to peanuts might be killed by the air born particles from a peanut product.
Some schools , however , have not gotten wholly on board with a peanut free environment. These schools do sometimes try to help the scholar with a food allergy though. These colleges allow for a peanut free table in the lunchroom. This is a table where only kids who have peanut free lunches can sit.
While this may appear to be a great idea and a great compromise, it is simply isolating a kid with a food allergy from the remainder of the class. Some have disagreed that this goes against the theory of least restrictive environment as laid down by recent tutorial laws. A kid with a food allergy should not need to be isolated from the rest of the class and their pals during lunchtime.
At Home
If you’ve a child with a food allergy, you try and do anything you can to avoid a food allergy symptom. Food allergy symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhea, swelling, hives, and even anaphylactic shock and death.
The home front is also a battlefield for child food allergies in that you have to be really diligent in keeping your child safe from contaminated foods. In some instances, it becomes obligatory for the whole family to chop the allergen out from their diet.
A child faces a repeated battle when diagnosed with an extraordinary food allergy like peanuts or gluten. Do your part to become educated and aware.
