People who suffer from food allergies know how important it is to avoid the allergens that they are sensitive to. Allergic reactions can happen quickly, and they can be life-threatening. Allergens in food sometimes occur in products where one least expects to find them. The benefits of allergy free foods include knowing exactly what is in the foods you consume.

Approximately 2 percent of adults and between 4 and 8 percent of children have allergic reactions to one or more foods. In the last decade there seems to have been an increase in the numbers of younger people with allergies. Each year, around thirty thousand Americans have food allergy responses acute enough to go to an emergency room. All this points to the fact that it is critical to control your food intake with regard to the substance or substances that produce the allergy.

Allergic reactions to food usually occur within a few minutes to an hour of the food being ingested. Symptoms can be as mild as an itchy mouth or as severe as anaphylactic shock, which can be fatal if untreated. There is no cure for food allergies, though children often do outgrow them, as adults also do sometimes.

Approximately 90 percent of all food allergies are caused by eight foods. These are fish, shellfish, wheat, soy, egg, milk, tree nuts and peanuts. Obviously, one can fairly easily avoid some of them, such as shellfish or fish. Others, however, being included as ingredients in other products, are less obvious. Wheat, egg, milk and soy are used widely in many different products. Even foods such as chocolate candy and Asian condiments may include peanuts, a major allergen for many.

An important United States law was passed in 2004, known as FALCPA. This act required food companies to clearly state on their labels if the product includes any of the 8 major allergy-causing substances. However, the law did not require the manufacturers to include information regarding possible cross-contamination of foods processed by equipment used for several different types of foods, perhaps including known allergens.

Cross-contact statements are being including by some manufacturers on their labels voluntarily, but there is still the potential for allergic problems to be incurred when buying food items manufactured for the general population of consumers. It may take only a very small amount of an allergen to cause serious problems for someone sensitive to it. Foods processed specifically with the needs of the food allergy sufferer in mind will have far less probability of containing unwanted allergens.

Obviously one may, if in doubt about a particular food item, contact the manufacturing company about ingredients included, or the possibility of cross-contamination with allergens. There is, however, a much higher comfort level knowing that a company manufactures foods specifically for those with food allergies. Among the benefits of allergy free foods is the greater degree of safety one can reasonably expect from foods processed this way.

Are you one of the growing number of people who suffer from an allergy? If you are then you have probably already tried different ways to manage your allergy, but have you ever thought of using an anti-allergy air purifier? They are not that expensive, but the real question is, whether anti-allergy air purifiers work or not.

However, the answer to this question is not quite so easy. In short and in general, yes, anti-allergy air purifiers do work, but there are a few catches. Not all particles that cause allergies are easy to trap and not all anti-allergy air purifiers are as good as each other. Furthermore, it takes different types of air purifiers to eliminate different allergens. You are unlikely to find one portable anti-allergy air purifier that will trap all allergens.

In short, anti-allergy air purifiers work by drawing in air from its surroundings and blowing it back out through a filter. Two things are important here: the volume of air that the pump can handle in an hour and the quality of the filter.

Therefore, it is important to buy a model with a high through-put and a high-quality filter and that filter has to be kept in shape by either cleaning or renewing it regularly.

However, not all anti-allergy air purifiers are intended to do the same job. Most anti-allergy air purifiers will trap dust, skin detritus, dust mites and dirt. However, second-hand tobacco smoke is better trapped by liquid anti-allergy air purifiers and bacteria is killed only with a system which passes the air through ultraviolet light. Even so, this UV light must be at least 24,000 microwatts UVGI, or else it is practically useless.

Airborne mold and mildew can be got rid of with anti-allergy air purifiers that produce ozone, although you should really call a contractor in to find and cure the cause of the mold or mildew.

Once you have identified what you are allergic to and discovered what type of anti-allergy air purification system will eliminate that allergen, you have to decide whether you want a portable system or a whole house air purification system. Portable units are all right for one room, a caravan or a trailer or even a tent, but as soon as someone opens the door, you lose a lot of the air that you have scrubbed.

If you live in a house or apartment with several rooms, then the best choice is one of the many whole house anti-allergy air purifiers. The cheapest method of achieving this is to insert an anti-allergy air purifying unit into your existing central heating and or central cooling system.

This reduces costs by making use of your existing ducting and existing blower. This allows more money to be spent on the filtration system and so, for between $300 and $1,000, you could clear your whole house of nearly all the common allergens.

These latter kinds of anti-allergy air purifiers really do work and are the most effective defense against allergies on the market.

I found this home remedy for cough and it worked so well that I wanted to share it with everyone.

The first night I tried it, my son threw up a bunch of phlegm after 5 minutes which helped him get cleared up. About an hour and a half later, I gave him another teaspon before going to bed and within 5 minutes he was asleep (it usually takes him at least 30 minutes to do that)! Although he had the rapid shallow breathing due to his history of asthma, he didn’t cough during this first night and was able to sleep the entire night.

He only needed 2 nebulizer treatments to control his asthma symptoms*.

On the second night his asthma symptoms were gone and really slept well – even eliminated his snoring (a chronic problem due to stuffed sinuses).

By day 3, he had an occassional cough – not as frequent, severe or lingering like his previous experiences (lasts for at least 2 weeks). He was even able to play basketball and spend a day outside. I only had to give it to him in the morning and before going to bed.

I usually give it every 3 hours until cough is gone.

Here’s to green living and good health.

SAY NO TO DRUGS!

*Please do not take this as a cure to his asthma symptoms. I only used this to control his cough. I have been using other approaches to control his asthma and allergies all of which I believe have currently helped him recover quickly. Should his symptoms not improve with his doctor prescribed rescue medications, we are prepared to contact his doctor/take him to the ER as with previous experiences. I am hoping that he will no longer require these rescue asthma medications in the future.

More and more people appear to be suffering from allergies in the West. It is unclear exactly why people are becoming more sensitive to everyday items, which only bothered a very small percentage of mankind for tens of thousands of years. Some people say it is because our world is so clean, so clinical, that our bodies have forgotten how to cope with a bit of dirt and others point to the increased quantity of air pollution. So could air purifiers be the solution?

If you have an allergic reaction, the first thing to do is to identify which substance you are allergic to. This is not easy to do on your own, so you will almost certainly need some professional medical help. Or you could begin by trying to eliminate dust from your house and see if that works. You would begin to do this by cleaning or replacing any filters you already have on the air conditioning and central heating and then turning the appropriate one on. Clean the vacuum cleaner’s filter too and change the bag, if it has one. Then vacuum the house thoroughly from top to bottom.

If this does not work, you may be allergic to pollen, mold or tobacco smoke, if there is a smoker in the house, or maybe environmental pollution from cars or and near-by industry. Try installing an electrostatic furnace filter and running your heating or cooling system 24 hours a day to see if that clears it up. The filters can clear up 90% of household dust and some other allergens.

The majority of airborne mold particles can be removed from your air by the use of specialist air purifiers. These air purifiers usually raise the ozone levels too, which has the effect of eliminating smells and killing some bacteria. However, for a longterm solution, you will have to consult a professional to clear up the source of the mold, which is usually dampness caused by leaking pipes or damp brickwork, caused by a bridged cavity wall.

Second-hand tobacco smoke is unpleasant enough, but it can bring about an allergic reaction too. If this is the cause of your problem, you could try one of the liquid air purifiers. This type of air purifier is very effective at its job. Some air purifiers purport to kill viruses too, but beware of such claims. The claim is normally based on the use of ultraviolet light, but any UV light producing less than 24,000 microwatts of UVGI is unlikely to be effective.

Unfortunately, there is no one total solution to the problem of air pollution, because there are so many types of substances that cause allergies. Carpets can be a major cause of allergens, as can all fabrics, particularly if you keep pets. Fleas, their larvae and house mites love carpets, curtains and upholstery, so you need to steam clean these at least once a year and spray them with a long-lasting insecticide containing permethrin or remove the carpets altogether and get leather furniture.

It is best to know which allergy you are fighting, but if you carry out the cleaning methods mentioned above and use one of the ozone producing air purifiers, you will have gone a very long way to cleaning the air in your home and defeating allergies.

It is essential that we all sleep well so that we wake up feeling refreshed and ready for whatever the next day throws at us. Even though we may be very tired when we go to bed there can be specific conditions that prevent us from sleeping undisturbed through the night. Every home will be full of allergens that at certain times of the year may cause adverse reactions in particular individuals; unfortunately the number of children that now suffer from allergic reactions to common household compounds and substances is at record levels. If this is a problem that is affecting you or a family member then you should learn about the advantages of allergy bedding & hypoallergenic bedding.

Even though you may believe your home to be very clean and hygienic it can be very difficult to prevent the occurrence of dust mites and other similar problems. These exist in almost every home but usually the humidity and temperature and not optimal for them to hatch and become a menace.

Once the conditions are beneficial for the lifecycle of the dust mites then you will have to ensure that steps are taken to protect the members of your household. Though the consequences are not deadly, they can be a constant irritation and lead to a deterioration in your quality of life.

Sneezing, runny nose, watering eyes, and a constant itching are the typical symptoms of a mite allergy. Usually we do not realize there is a problem until we are suffering in this manner. Household mites are very small, almost impossible to be seen with the naked eye. The can be found living in your carpets, furnishings, as well as bedding.

It is when we are in bed that we are at greatest risk from being attacked. By the time we start itching and sneezing, the damage will have already been done. A mattress is a perfect place for mites to live as not only is it warm but your dead skin cells provide an excellent growth medium. Do you know how many mites can be living in your mattress? The answer is millions!

There are preventative measures you can take to reduce the chance of people in your home being affected by mites as well as other allergens. By using hypoallergenic bedding there will be an immediate reduction in the severity and extent of allergy attacks.

These products have been designed with a tighter fabric weave. This prevents the movement of mites between bedding layers. Also, as the number of asthma sufferers is also at record levels, there are those products that will contain less harmful chemicals. A further issue that may lead to health complaints can be mold and mildew. Choose a form of bedding that is naturally resistant to fungus.

If the bedding is to be for a young child then you will need to be sure it can be easily cleaned. It is surprising how easy it is for a child to make a mess of their sheets.

Smartsilk allergy relief bedding & dust mite bed covers help alleviate allergy problems so you get a good night’s rest. The first allergy free bedding to be certified asthma & allergy friendly!

There are various forms of air purifier systems, so it can be difficult to know what someone means when they talking about air purifying. For instance, all air conditioning units and most central heating systems have some form of air purification built in. In deed, the air purification filters in most split air conditioning units are very advanced. A similar add-on unit can be purchased for most central heating and central conditioning systems.

However, you may not require heating or cooling units, but you may want a dedicated air purifier. Air purification units can greatly increase your quality of life, particularly if you suffer from an allergy or live with a smoker or pets.

Air purifiers or air cleaners, as they are also known, clean the air of pollutants and foreign bodies. However, some air purifiers are more sophisticated than others, so it is a good idea to identify what you want to eliminate from your air before you buy one.

This is because not all systems will take all types of filter and not all filters will trap all pollutants. Some will, but not all. So if you want to clean pollen out of the air because you suffer from hay fever, check with the supplier that the unit that you like, can do the job.

Air purifiers will greatly help allergy sufferers and some people do not know that they have an allergy. Some people are allergic to pet hairs, or dog and or cat skin particles or smoke or traffic pollutants like tyre rubber to speak nothing of the exhaust fumes that none of us want. So, if you live close to a road or a factory, or keep a cat or a dog, you live with a smoker or you suffer from hay fever, an air purifier would probably be good for you.

How you do this is clearly up to you. If you have a central air conditioning unit already, it is probably better for you to install an air purification system near your blower. This technique is relatively inexpensive ($300 – $1,000), but it will purify the air in the whole house.

If you live in a bedsit, a trailer or a caravan and it gets hot where you live, a split air con system is probably better for you, but if you just want to purify the air immediately around you, then a portable air purifier will suffice.

One word of warning though, many of the cheaper portable air purifying units are worse than worthless because they are burning your electricity without giving you any benefit. These cheap models do not have the power to purify large volumes of air and they do not have filters that are capable of blocking the allergens that bother us.
