People who suffer from food allergies know how important it is to avoid the allergens that they are sensitive to. Allergic reactions can happen quickly, and they can be life-threatening. Allergens in food sometimes occur in products where one least expects to find them. The benefits of allergy free foods include knowing exactly what is in the foods you consume.

Approximately 2 percent of adults and between 4 and 8 percent of children have allergic reactions to one or more foods. In the last decade there seems to have been an increase in the numbers of younger people with allergies. Each year, around thirty thousand Americans have food allergy responses acute enough to go to an emergency room. All this points to the fact that it is critical to control your food intake with regard to the substance or substances that produce the allergy.

Allergic reactions to food usually occur within a few minutes to an hour of the food being ingested. Symptoms can be as mild as an itchy mouth or as severe as anaphylactic shock, which can be fatal if untreated. There is no cure for food allergies, though children often do outgrow them, as adults also do sometimes.

Approximately 90 percent of all food allergies are caused by eight foods. These are fish, shellfish, wheat, soy, egg, milk, tree nuts and peanuts. Obviously, one can fairly easily avoid some of them, such as shellfish or fish. Others, however, being included as ingredients in other products, are less obvious. Wheat, egg, milk and soy are used widely in many different products. Even foods such as chocolate candy and Asian condiments may include peanuts, a major allergen for many.

An important United States law was passed in 2004, known as FALCPA. This act required food companies to clearly state on their labels if the product includes any of the 8 major allergy-causing substances. However, the law did not require the manufacturers to include information regarding possible cross-contamination of foods processed by equipment used for several different types of foods, perhaps including known allergens.

Cross-contact statements are being including by some manufacturers on their labels voluntarily, but there is still the potential for allergic problems to be incurred when buying food items manufactured for the general population of consumers. It may take only a very small amount of an allergen to cause serious problems for someone sensitive to it. Foods processed specifically with the needs of the food allergy sufferer in mind will have far less probability of containing unwanted allergens.

Obviously one may, if in doubt about a particular food item, contact the manufacturing company about ingredients included, or the possibility of cross-contamination with allergens. There is, however, a much higher comfort level knowing that a company manufactures foods specifically for those with food allergies. Among the benefits of allergy free foods is the greater degree of safety one can reasonably expect from foods processed this way.

Are you one of the growing number of people who suffer from an allergy? If you are then you have probably already tried different ways to manage your allergy, but have you ever thought of using an anti-allergy air purifier? They are not that expensive, but the real question is, whether anti-allergy air purifiers work or not.

However, the answer to this question is not quite so easy. In short and in general, yes, anti-allergy air purifiers do work, but there are a few catches. Not all particles that cause allergies are easy to trap and not all anti-allergy air purifiers are as good as each other. Furthermore, it takes different types of air purifiers to eliminate different allergens. You are unlikely to find one portable anti-allergy air purifier that will trap all allergens.

In short, anti-allergy air purifiers work by drawing in air from its surroundings and blowing it back out through a filter. Two things are important here: the volume of air that the pump can handle in an hour and the quality of the filter.

Therefore, it is important to buy a model with a high through-put and a high-quality filter and that filter has to be kept in shape by either cleaning or renewing it regularly.

However, not all anti-allergy air purifiers are intended to do the same job. Most anti-allergy air purifiers will trap dust, skin detritus, dust mites and dirt. However, second-hand tobacco smoke is better trapped by liquid anti-allergy air purifiers and bacteria is killed only with a system which passes the air through ultraviolet light. Even so, this UV light must be at least 24,000 microwatts UVGI, or else it is practically useless.

Airborne mold and mildew can be got rid of with anti-allergy air purifiers that produce ozone, although you should really call a contractor in to find and cure the cause of the mold or mildew.

Once you have identified what you are allergic to and discovered what type of anti-allergy air purification system will eliminate that allergen, you have to decide whether you want a portable system or a whole house air purification system. Portable units are all right for one room, a caravan or a trailer or even a tent, but as soon as someone opens the door, you lose a lot of the air that you have scrubbed.

If you live in a house or apartment with several rooms, then the best choice is one of the many whole house anti-allergy air purifiers. The cheapest method of achieving this is to insert an anti-allergy air purifying unit into your existing central heating and or central cooling system.

This reduces costs by making use of your existing ducting and existing blower. This allows more money to be spent on the filtration system and so, for between $300 and $1,000, you could clear your whole house of nearly all the common allergens.

These latter kinds of anti-allergy air purifiers really do work and are the most effective defense against allergies on the market.

For decades now doctors have been telling us that we should stay out of the sun. And if we (gasp) had to spend time outside, we should cover ourselves in the highest SPF sunscreen possible.

Well, it seems that they may be realizing now that they were wrong!

It seems that a recent study reported in the Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology found that “asthmatic children with relatively low vitamin D levels in their blood may have a greater risk of suffering severe asthma attacks than those with higher levels of the vitamin.” (source)

While some fatty fish, such as salmon, provide vitamin D naturally, the primary natural source of vitamin D in your body is sunlight. That’s right, the same sun that the doctors warned you to stay away from.

What’s worse is that it would almost seem that this must have been known before. At least there must have been knowledge that keeping people out of the sun would cause vitamin D deficiency, otherwise why would so many foods, like milk, orange juice and breakfast cereals, be fortified with it?

It isn’t just asthma, either. A friend of mine was diagnosed with hypertension over a year ago, and the doctor said was caused by vitamin D deficiency. The doctor actually told her to take supplements and to go out in the sun more.

And the list goes on. According to that same article, “Vitamin D may be best known for its role in healthy bone development and maintenance, but it is also needed for normal nerve, muscle and immune system function. Some studies have linked low vitamin D levels to a higher risk of type 1 or “insulin-dependent” diabetes in children and, in adults, heart disease and certain cancers.” (source)

I think the lesson here is balance. Don’t stay out of the sun. Don’t spend too much time in the sun either, because that has been linked to skin cancer. Eat as balanced a diet as you can, and stay active. You’ll be amazed at how much easier and better life is when you find the balance.

Asthma affects the lungs and makes breathing difficult or impossible. Approximately 22 million Americans are living with this. The condition has a serious impact on people’s lives and can be fatal. Attacks may be triggered by any number of things but treatment options are available. Two main forms of asthma exist.

Understanding what goes wrong is important. Our lungs supply our bodies with the oxygen we all need to survive. In normally functioning lungs, air is inhaled, the oxygen is removed and the air is exhaled. In someone with pulmonary issues, the lungs become narrow and breathing is impaired. The lungs constrict and inflammation causes swelling. This is referred to as an asthma attack.

Allergies occur when the body’s immune system overreacts to a substance the individual has contact with. This can lead to breathing problems. Exercise is also a cause of attacks in some people. With occupational triggers, workers inhale substances in the workplace that lead to attacks. Finally, when someone experiences a frequent, non-productive cough, he may have cough variant asthma.

It’s more difficult to determine whether a patient has the cough variant of the condition. This is because, in this form, the patient often has normal lung function. Doctors usually use the same medications to treat cough variant that are used to treat the more common constriction type.

As with any medical condition, patients need to consult with their physician for diagnosis and treatment. This is important whether the patient has the more common form or the cough variant.

Doctors determine the course of treatment by considering what triggers the attacks and how bad the symptoms are. One of the approaches to dealing with occupational or allergic triggers is to avoid the specific substances that lead to symptoms. Patients have the option to have an allergy test to see what they’re allergic to. Many patients also have good results when the allergies are treated.

There are a variety of medications that doctors can prescribe for their patients. There are medicines that reduce the frequency of symptoms and attacks. These are taken every day. Also, rescue inhalers are used when an attack occurs to provide immediate relief. Physicians will often prescribe both in order to manage symptoms. However, doctors sometimes need to try different medications and treatments to help each patient achieve optimal results.

Asthma has serious consequences for the people living with it. It’s a medical condition that requires a doctor’s care. Physicians find the treatments that work best for each patient. This means that patients can manage their symptoms and live their lives to the fullest, even with asthma.

In an asthmatic person, the first stage is the same as in the healthy person. In the second stage however, the airway instead of relaxing to expel, suddenly constricts further provoking acute breathlessness and respiratory distress. An asthma remedy is one thing; asthma prevention is another.

Almost every person in the world is affected by some sort of allergy. Different substances have different effects on people. Some can cause only minor symptoms, other allergies can be life-threatening. For those who take a great deal of medication and worry about an allergy medication interfering, there are plenty of ways to find a good natural allergy cure.

The best natural way to help allergies is to prevent them from happening in the first place. The first step to take is to have yourself properly tested by a doctor. Testing has gotten far more accurate in recent years and can pin-point the specific elements that cause the reactions. This is great because it can allow individuals to come into contact with things they previous thought they were allergic to. For example, you could think you were allergic to a type of food, when you are actually only allergic to one small component of the food.

The better the diagnosis, the more able you are to avoid what really makes you sick. The more knowledge you have, the less of a chance you will need medication. Of course, this depends on your personal reaction to the allergen.

One very old but under-used way to decrease the symptoms of allergies is to build up an immunity. This is something to be worked out with your doctor, but it is a natural cure. Just as some poisons can be used as cures if they are in the correct small dosage, so can the allergen cure you of your allergies. It is a matter of one’s tolerance.

It can either be in the form of a vaccination or in the form of just encountering the allergy-causing element in controlled rations. The doctor will help you figure out a schedule in order introduce the allergen into your system in a very small dose. After short while, your body will get used to that amount and may not react. Then the dosage will be increased.

The amount is then increased slightly. Your body is allowed to get used to that amount. It is then increased again. Eventually you will be taking in large amounts of an allergen–amounts that once would have given you a severe reaction.

There are other ways you can cure your allergies in natural ways. These methods are usually in the form of vitamins and herbal supplements. They improve your immune system and could possibly undo the effects of allergens before you notice any symptoms. The great thing about vitamin supplements is that they usually do not require a prescription and are fairly inexpensive.

Some other remedies can be very useful, though they are controversial. These include acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine. Naturopathy or homeopathy and physical or psychological therapy have also been known to have positive effect.

Most families have done without an air purifier for generations – hundreds or even thousands of years, so what, you may be asking yourself is the rush to get one now? And it is true, there is a bit of a buzz about air purifiers at the moment. But do they work all right and are they worth the money?

The answers to both of these questions are not simple, but everyone would have to acquiesce that the motor revolves when you plug them in, so in that sense they do all work. Whether they are effectual or not depends on what you buy. There are some very useful air purifying units and there is a lot of junk too.

The really ineffective ones are the very cheap models, that are just not powerful enough and do not even contain adequate filters, but leaving those aside, there are very good portable air purifiers and very good central air purifier systems.

So, the first thing you have to determine is whether you want a central or portable air purifying system. If you want to clean the air in your office at work or your caravan or trailer, then a good portable purifier will do the job very well. The reason why a portable purifier is not so good for the home is size. Your house is just too big for one portable air purifying unit.

If you locked yourself up in one room, then OK, but as soon as you open the door, or someone walks into the room, you have lost a lot of your clean air. Therefore, if you are thinking about purifying the air in your house, you really have to go for a central system, particularly if you already have ducting in place for a central heating or central air conditioning system.

If you are lucky enough to have such a system then a powerful and very efficient air purification system can be fitted near your existing blower in minutes in most cases. These devices will purify the air in your whole home at the same time, which means that you can walk about your house, go about your daily business and leave interconnecting doors open at leisure. It is the only way to go if you have active children. This is often the cheapest option too, believe it or not.

If you are going to buy a portable model, note the measurements of the largest room you are likely to use it in and work out the volume of air in that room (length x width x height). You will have to check that whichever air purifier you get can handle that volume of air. That information will be in sales pamphlet. The cost of filters is an important aspect in the total cost of a purifier. How much are they and how often do they have to be replaced? Can they be cleaned a few times before needing to be changed?

Think about why you want an air purifier. Is it because you want to combat a specific allergy? Is it because there is a smoker in the house? Is it because of pets? Or is it just because of increasing levels of general pollution from cars and industry? Whatever the reason, make sure that the air purification system you are thinking about purchasing can take filters that can take those substances from the air. Not all filters are identical – not all filters can filter everything.

If you have any form of air purification system installed in your house or office, you will need to replace the air filters at some time or another. I am not only talking about dedicated equipment that only purifies the air here, but also air conditioning units such as you would find at home, in the office or even in the car. The theory is the same for all.

So, you may be operating an air purifier without even realizing it, but in that case, especially if it is an older one, it could be doing you more harm than good. This is because a dirty filter will be blowing unpurified air into the room at best, but in the worst case scenario, it might even be blowing contaminated air at you. Modern air filters do not only stop flies or even pollen from getting into the set-up through the air intake, they go as far as trying to block common germs too.

So, you have two options. If you have never changed or cleaned your air filter or if you did not even realize you had one and the air conditioner or air purifying unit is over a year old, you should do something about it right away. Start by reading the handbook. If you do not have one go on line and look to see if there is any information on your model at the maker’s website or even just anywhere on the Internet. If on the other hand, you have been cleaning and replacing your filter methodically, think about getting a better quality filter next time.

You can go about finding the best brands of air filters for your particular type of unit by writing down any serial numbers and identification numbers and names. The brand and model are very helpful too. You have two options here too. If you like going around the shops, take this information with you and ask about the best filters in several outlets A large DIY or department store could doubtless help here. Write every name and detail they give you down on paper and take it home. I prefer to go on the Internet first and take that information around the shops.

Check everything they have told you on the Internet. Check it with the manufacturer’s web site and compare prices. Decide what you want to buy and where from. Get a year’s supply in one go, it saves a lot of bother. Three or four units should last a year, if they are cleanable.

A high quality air filter will work better than a cheaper one. It will trap more pollutants, including smoke and fumes – even some germs, if it has been impregnated with a germicide. Many come with a long-lasting mild air freshener too, which will save you buying sprays.

Better quality air filters will save you money and hassle by lasting longer in good serviceable condition. Cheaper ones may say they last as long, but the germicide and the air freshener may have evaporated within a week or two. Try to get a filter that is cleanable. The best ones can be cleaned two of three times before they have to be changed. If it is three times then it will last four months, meaning that you only need three a year at most.

If you have purchased an unknown make of air conditioner or purifier, there is a good chance that it was still made by one of the big names or it a copy of a famous name, in which case a better filter may still fit into it. In this situation, take your old filter to the shop with you to get it compared.
