Asthma is the chronic respiratory condition where the lungs get inflamed and the airways get narrowed. The constriction of the airways causes shortness of breath, chest tightness and/or pains, coughing, and wheezing. Wheezing is a subject of much misconception. While wheezing is present in mild to acute asthma, it may be absent in severe asthma since the airflow would be hindered enough for any wheezing sound to be produced.

Asthma has a steady state. In this steady state, the asthmatic can continue living a normal life. Occasional nighttime coughing may occur, but nothing that an inhaler cannot take care of. But asthma, when left unchecked, gets worse without being known. The asthmatic may feel perfectly fine without realizing that the airways are starting to constrict; inhaling airborne irritants speeds up the process of asthma exacerbation.

Asthma triggers include, but are not limited to, smoke, dust, pollen, strong odors, fumes, and molds. Most of these can be avoided. But there will be a time that exposure to them is inevitable. This brings about an asthma attack, wherein the symptoms are worse than those in its steady state. Asthma attacks are generally characterized by wheezing.

The asthma attack is the event where the narrowing of the airways occurs to a point that it makes it hard to breathe. To relieve asthma episodes, inhalers are commonly used. These inhalers contain and deliver quick-acting bronchodilators. Bronchodilators are substances that relax and widen the airways; as the words dilate and bronchi imply. Basically, they normalize breathing.

Fast-acting bronchodilators often come in aerosol, powder, or mist form. They are more popular in those forms than in pills because inhaled bronchodilators can target the lungs directly. Even hospitals use nebulizers that deliver bronchodilator medication to relieve a severe asthma attacks. For this reason, inhalers are often referred to as an asthmatics best friend.

Herbs have been disregarded by the medical community as a viable alternative to treatments of various kinds of ailments. They see herbs as food ingredients and nothing more. They do admit that anyone can benefit from herbs in achieving better wellbeing. The reason that herbs have been under fire is because of the side effects that have been experienced by some of its users. While most of these is due to improper diagnosis and miscalculations in formulas, the medical community stands its ground.

It is sad that due to the mistakes and greediness of scrupulous companies more and more people are losing trust in the affectivity of herbal medication in terms of treatment. There is actually a lot of benefit that you can get from using herbal medication. For one, herbal medicines act on the source of the illness as well as take care of the other underlying conditions that might make it worse bringing about longer relief and greater control when it comes to asthma or any other condition while preventing other ailments from setting in. Herbal medicines (with expert guidance and proper supervision) can bring about recovery faster, are cheap, requires minimal to no preparation, and results are longer lasting. Just to give an example of the herbal medicines that have proven themselves effective and safe against asthma, here are a few:

Cayenne: The spice that you can commonly find in restaurants and in your kitchen is also considered to be one of the most prized herbs in the herb kingdom. Not only for the treatment of asthma but also for various other illnesses including heart attacks. Cayenne contains high levels of capsaicin that is responsible for promoting circulation into anything that comes into contact with. For asthmatics this means, dilation of the bronchial tubes and break down of mucus making breathing easier just after a few minutes of ingestion.

Ginger: Another popular kitchen ingredient, ginger has a long history of being associated with asthma. The pharmacological components of ginger have been found to negate the effects of the platelet-activating factor, or PAF, which is responsible for initiating inflammatory processes when allergens are present. This helps prevent the inflammation of the airways that accompanies exacerbation of asthma. Ginger is also rich in antioxidants; promoting wellbeing.

Chamomile: Another example of an effective herbal alternative that has long been used for treating various illnesses. The herb when taken in tea form has a great relaxant action breaking down mucus and relieving inflamed airways bringing relief and preventing attacks from getting worse or taking place as well. When taken daily chamomile also has great anti oxidizing effects preventing the build of free radicals in the body preventing the onset of any ailments that might worsen asthma.

These are only three among the long list of asthma herbal remedies, but if you’re looking for the ones that work, any of these three would be a good start. Do a little more research for yourself so you can find an asthma herbal cure that may work wonders for you.

There are plenty of home remedies that you can actually choose from which could help you achieve relief of your condition during flare ups and attacks. Home remedies of course, should not be treated as your primary treatment during attacks but should only be considered during emergencies where access to rescue/relief medication is not immediately available. Because of the number of home remedies that are available, you would probably find yourself at a loss as to what can really be effective for your condition because you wouldn’t want to end up experimenting which ones work while you’re already flaring up or having an attack.

The number of home remedies available may be confusing for a first timer. What you need are those remedies tested and proven to work by asthmatics around the world. Here are some examples of the most effective home remedies that you can turn to if your trusty inhaler fails you.

Coffee: Doctors actually advise asthmatics to drink hot, dark, and preferably strong coffee in emergency situations. The main components in coffee are theophylline and theobromine. These components help in stopping bronchial spasms, breaking down mucus, opening up the airways, and bring relief. The recommended amount for achieving maximum effect is two cups of brewed coffee, if possible.

Honey: Preferably local, non-processed, and non-tampered honey has been found to have an aroma that helps relieve asthmatics by breaking down the mucus blocking the airways; thereby reducing inflammation caused by the exacerbation of your asthma. Simply put, inhaling the aroma of pure honey makes it easier for you to breathe. Besides the quick relief it gives you, honey can also be used in combination with your conventional medication for prevention. Two teaspoons of honey in a glassful of milk taken every night have bee found to prevent the occurrences of allergic reactions and nocturnal asthma attacks.

Steam: If you happen to run out of medications, coffee, and honey, then you can turn to the easiest to produce and most readily available home remedy you have: steam. You can do the steam inhalation in two ways. The first is just letting your bathroom shower run with the highest heat setting on, and allow the steam to linger inside. You may then stay in the bathroom and enjoy the sauna, or you can pop your head in the door to inhale the steam. The second way is to boil some water and put it in an open container. Put your head a few inches from the opening and inhale the steam that rises. Hot steam, again, helps break down the mucus and facilitate better airflow for easier breathing.

Remember that home remedies are only considered during times of emergency. These will not be able to give you permanent relief, but it can buy you some time until you get your medication.

A study that was recently conducted in Gainesville, Florida has shown that the acai berry extract is killing cancer cells that have up to now have been resistant to other experiments. This study at the University of Florida is among the first to study what the acai berry can do.

In this test, leukaemia cells were exposed to acai berry extract, with the surprising result that 86% of the cancer cells self-destructed. Acai berries were already known as one of the best sources of antioxidant compounds, but this study’s findings are truly extraordinary. An assistant professor at the University of Florida (in the Institute of Food and Agricultural Services) was able to confirm for us that this figure of 86% was indeed the case.

There are other fruits that have antioxidants that may be able to kill leukaemia cells. However, all research is preliminary because there have to be other influences factored in the process. Still the percentages are quite impressive.

The Australian public has quickly gotten on the acai bandwagon, with great popularity present for a diet rich in tropical fruits such as acai, noni, goji and mangosteen. There are quite a large number of promotions ongoing for juice products made from these fruits. Many of these fruits have been found to be high in antioxidants.

A study in Brisbane, Australia in March of 2008 has focused on the differences between the juice type antioxidants and the olive leaves antioxidants. While the results found in the olive leaf have very promising results when it comes to containing antioxidants, the studies with the acai berry are far more conclusive.

The most interesting of these studies are, of course, the ones which have been done on fruits and cancer. U.S. researchers are working tirelessly to find a cure for cancer, especially leukaemia. Australia is doing the same in regard to cancer research. Leukaemia is the top disease related cause of death in children aged 20 and younger worldwide. For this reason, leukaemia research is a priority for many nations around the globe.

So far, all of the research is still preliminary and there is much more to be learned about the anti cancer properties of these fruits. The acai berry, for example, contains nearly 75 chemical compounds and the exact properties of many of these are as yet unknown. The acai berry is a difficult fruit to study due to its extremely short shelf life.

Acai berries are similar in size to a blueberry, when ripe are a dark purple colour, and have a seed inside. When they are picked, if they are not used immediately or frozen, they decompose. Because they come from the Amazon River floodplains the options for freezing them for a long journey are not as viable as the alternative.

To be imported all the way to Australia, acai powder works best. This is produced from acai berries by dehydrating and then freeze-drying acai pulp. Far easier and cheaper to export than are the ripe berries, this powder can then be used in all sorts of nutritional supplements and foods. The powder contains all of the same nutritional and health benefits of the fresh berries.

Although studies are only preliminary for now, the hope that one day leukaemia and other cancers will be cured is still alive. The sad fact is that leukaemia strikes more children than adults. For the children who suffer from this disease, the day that such a cure is found will be a great day indeed.

Author: Americo Tognetti is astounded by the acai berry because it supplies such a boost to all in the Acai Fruit Powder.

The boom in the number of asthma herbal remedies that have been entering the market today actually brings both good and bad news to the consuming public. The good news is that individuals will have more and better choices to pick from at cheaper costs due to competition, the bad news is that because of the number of new products flooding the market its getting more and more difficult to pick which ones can really be effective and which ones should be avoided because of potentially dangerous side effects.

These hospitalization cases have scarred the image of herbal remedies in the western world, despite the fact that herbs do promote physical well being and strengthens immunity. Herbal remedies have been used in China for a very long time. The Chinese are also the largest population in the world. Do the math. If herbs were that dangerous, don’t you think the Chinese would have been decimated already? Still, if you want to play safe, here are a few proven safe, effective, and simple asthma herbal remedies:

Cayenne pepper: Cayenne pepper is widely recognized as a cooking ingredient or a condiment. The truth is, it is actually regarded as one of the purest and oldest in the herb kingdom. Cayenne contains capsaicin which promotes circulation to any organ it comes into contact with. It helps break down mucus in the lungs and prevents inflammation. If you are open to making a choice with alternative medications for asthma, you can not go wrong with cayenne.

Ginger: Ginger is one of the most common and widely used herbal remedy on the planet. Also considered by a lot of people to be more of an ingredient rather than herbal medication, ginger has in fact been used by people in India and most parts of Asia in treating various illnesses including asthma. Scientists have also found evidence to support the effectiveness of ginger in treating a wide range of medicinal actions. Ginger’s active chemical ingredients can act as an expectorant and bronchodilator during attacks bringing relief quicker and safer even if taken together with your conventional rescue/relief medication.

Chamomile: Chamomile extracts called terpenoids have anti-inflammatory properties and can help you prevent other respiratory problems because of the large amounts of antioxidants it contains. If the name sounds familiar but you can’t really put your finger on it, chamomile is popular in tea form. Taken daily, it helps boost your immune system, and it’s also delicious.

If you have noticed, not all of the herbal alternatives out there are dangerous. Most of them are quite common and you may be surprised to find more just sitting in your own kitchen. Do more research of your own and you can find the herbal treatments that will do wonders for you.

Asthma is a condition that must be dealt with care. It is very unpredictable, with attacks quickly manifesting without warning. Asthmatics are often frustrated since they are often deprived of the enjoyment and benefits that certain physical activities bring. Exercising is one such example. We all know that exercise is very important to every man and woman, asthmatic and non-asthmatic.

For asthmatics the need to exercise is greatly emphasized as it can promote general well being as well as strengthen immunity to the allergens that one might encounter. The problem is that even with the possible benefits that asthmatics can get from exercise it can also cause flare-ups and attacks. Exercise induced asthma is one of the reasons why a lot of asthmatics avoid physical activities which would otherwise be beneficial for them.

There is a way, however, that you can still do your workout without having to worry about your condition. This is possible through early precaution plus the knowledge of various symptoms that you may run into. When you know the symptoms, you can take the necessary actions, thus allowing you to continue with your regimen by preventing asthma attacks. Here are some of the exercise induced asthma symptoms that you should be aware of:

Sharp pain in the chest followed by a numbing feeling to various parts of the body: This is probably at the top of all the exercise induced asthma symptoms. If anytime during your workout you feel this sensation, stop immediately and take your medication. It would probably be good idea to schedule your work out or activity on another day as this symptom can be quickly followed by a severe asthma attack if not given proper attention.

Lightheadedness: This tells you that your body cannot keep up with the activities that you are currently doing. Tone down your regimen a little or pause for a few minute breaks in between to rest. To be on the safe side, keep your medications close, and take them if you see fit.

Persistent coughing: Coughing is a strong signal that you are going to be soon out of breath. Coughing during workouts can only mean one thing: you are not getting enough air due to your airways becoming narrowed. This happens when airborne particles get in contact with the lungs, or you just exerted too much force that you put a little strain on your body. Keep in mind that if your body can’t keep up with what you’re doing, it will shut down on you to put your activity to a stop.

Wheezing: Wheezing is the most obvious sign that you are starting to have an asthma attack, whether you’re exercising or not. When you start whistling involuntarily, immediately drop whatever you are doing and observer your condition. Take a puff from your inhaler if you see fit. It would be safe to continue your workout another day. Sometimes you can resume once the wheezing stops.

Monitor your body closely during exercising so as to avoid unwelcome asthma attacks. Do not push your body to the limits, as the next bed you may be sleeping in would be a hospital bed.

What asthma symptoms do you know? Can you tell the difference between asthma symptoms and symptoms of other illnesses? If you said yes, well then good for you. Others though cannot tell the difference between the hidden signs of asthma. They pass these symptoms as just mild discomfort or a symptom of other illnesses. If you experienced asthma attacks that came almost out of nowhere, chances are that there were early warning signs that you failed to detect or correctly interpret.

There are a wide variety of symptoms that can show up before an asthma attack. There are attacks that may occur without showing pre-exacerbation symptoms, but the chances are pretty low; a mere 10-15%. That figure alone gives plenty of room for asthma attacks to show early signs before it actually happens. To be able to effectively manage asthma, you need to learn how to recognize the stealthy symptoms. You already probably know the other common symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. Here are three symptoms that you may not realize are early signs for an asthma attack:

Pale, sweaty face: believe it or not, this is an asthma symptom. Wondering this can be in any way connected to asthma? The reason is actually very simple, as your bronchial tubes gradually start to close due to contact with a foreign object, air can still get in comfortably but not reach every system in your body that needs it, this minimal yet gradual strain on your body begins to show as the symptom begins to worsen; which of course results in your face turning pale accompanied by breakout of cold sweat.

Feeling anxious or panicky: This would be a milder version of the previous example. It is caused by the same gradual strain brought about by the narrowing bronchial tubes and depriving your body of its much needed oxygen. The anxiety here is brought about by the feeling that there’s something wrong but you just don’t know what it is. When this is ignored or overlooked, the near future asthma attack confirms your suspicions.

Fatigue: Fatigue is a dangerous type of asthma symptom because of the time it can take before bringing out the true reason. Attacks can be very severe and if not given proper attention, fatal. Experiencing fatigue even with sufficient rest or for almost no particular reason should not be ignored as it is most likely due to your condition. If you feel this symptom, talk to your doctor so that further diagnosis and treatment can be made.

Asthma is manageable and controllable. But for you to manage and control your asthma, you will need to know almost everything about it so as for you to take proper action if the occasion calls for it. Learn all you can about the symptoms to prevent getting caught off guard in the future.

Asthma symptoms in adults are not all that different from those experienced by children. There are minor differences, though, which are the severity of attacks and actions that are to be taken. Asthma symptoms in children are monitored closely as per instructions from doctors, guardians, and parents. Adults, on the other hand, tend to ignore the symptoms due to varying circumstances.

Early detection and prevention is important in any health issue. This applies to asthma as well. To achieve long term relief and greater control over your asthma, you have to determine the symptoms of your condition so as for you to be able to do immediate preventive actions. Here are some of the symptoms that you may or may not be aware of:

Shortness of breath: Also known as dyspnea, shortness of breath is the number one problem of asthmatics. It is a misconception that the more out of breath you are, the more impaired your lung functionality is. With that said, one can experience a mild shortness of breath yet fall victim to an asthma attack; and vice versa. If you are having shortness of breath, learn to recognize that as your cue to look for your medication as you may need it more than you think.

Coughing: Coughing is nothing new. It can be a sign of the flu, cold, or any other illness making people miss taking it into consideration that it might already be a symptom of their condition. Experiencing dry, unproductive cough, that tends to worsen or pop up during colder days should not be ignored as it can already be your body trying to tell you something.

Sleep apnea: Sleep apnea is a chronic condition which is characterized by pauses or shallow breathing. This condition can also come and go and is not a sure sign of an oncoming attack. The pauses or shallow breaths are caused by constriction in the bronchial tubes making it difficult for air to flow in and out freely. Tell your doctor immediately if you start to experience this symptom as there may be a deeper cause to it.

Chest tightness and/or pain: If you start feeling tightness or pain in the chest during activities for seemingly unknown reasons, take your medications and brief someone close as it may be a sign of a serious asthma attack.

When you encounter these symptoms, take action immediately so as to prevent the worsening of your asthma. Do not take a blind leap of faith by waiting to see if the symptoms really are of asthmatic nature. Doing so will stretch the road between you and your much-desired long term relief from asthma.

Are you interested in learning how to eat better and living a healthier life? Are you interested in learning to eat well without denying yourself all the delicious foods that are part of your diet? If this is something that interests you, it’s time to look at what the acai berry can offer. People everywhere are discovering the importance of the acai berry and incorporating it into their diets. It makes sense for you to learn more about it too.

You need to learn a little more about the acai berry. It’s pronounced ” ah-SIGH-ee” and has been a very well kept secret of the Amazon rainforest. It is grown on the acai tree. The tree produces a deep, dark purple fruit about an inch long. The fruit is lovely and is very good for humans.

The acai berry itself tastes like a mix of berries and chocolate, and while it is delicious, it is also worth knowing that it packs a powerful punch. In the first place, it is the fruit that has the highest concentration of antioxidants in it, beating out the blueberry several times over!

Similarly, it is also worth noting that the acai berry has trace amounts of caffeine in it, giving your body a natural boost, and giving you a little more energy than you would normally have. Have you ever thought that you would get so much more accomplished if only you didn’t feel so fatigued? This might be the natural answer for you.

Another one of the benefits of eating the acai berry is that it provides many essential nutrients that many people lack. Many people feel fatigued or sluggish because they aren’t getting the nutrients their body needs. Adding the acai berry to your diet can pick up some of the slack.

The acai berry was initially noticed when surfers where using it during South American surfing competitions. The surfers were adding acai berries to their slushies because it improved their performance. It’s very likely that the acai berry can improve your performance as well.

Even though the acai berry is new to the modern Western world, it is important to keep in mind that its not new at all. The acai berry has been used by the people that live in the Amazon rainforest for thousands of years because of its healing properties. These ancient people have always considered this fruit to be a super food and today’s people feel the same way.

You can take advantage of the many different ways to enjoy the acai berry. It is very difficult to get a hold of the acai berry in places other than where it’s grown, but you can still enjoy it. You can use the dried berries, acai berry juice, or one of the powdered drink mixes.

When you are looking for ways to enjoy a healthier diet, you need to consider all your options. This super fruit from the Amazon, the acai berry, could be the right choice for you.

About the author: Americo Tognetti recommends the acai berry as a surprising super food offered to you as refreshing Acai Fruit Powder.
