Unfortunately, asthma is seen as a life long chronic illness; however, you can lessen the extent and severity of asthma attacks you have with natural asthma remedies. This does not mean that you ought to discard your inhaler or puffer if you have or use one, but these remedies can reduce your dependency upon these devices by a substantial amount.

A short description of asthma is that it is the contraction of your bronchial airways. As you suffer an asthma attack, your airways constrict leaving you suddenly short of breath, making you cough and then gasp for air. Sometimes asthma may be triggered by allergies; in other cases the causes are considerably more obvious.

Some natural asthma treatments aid in the prevention of attacks. Here are few of the more common ones:

1. Avoid smoke or smoke filled rooms. In the event you smoke, it is best to quit because it can irritate your bronchial passages and bring on severe asthma attacks;

2. Use antacids before going to bed. Sometimes asthma is triggered by heartburn or acid reflux and an antacid can prevent this.

3. Be careful of what you eat, because eating the wrong foods can trigger asthma attacks. A few of the foods which could cause these attacks include milk, eggs, nuts and seafood.

4. Lower your salt consumption whenever possible.

5. Be careful about your exposure to and be aware of food additives. Certain food additives can trigger asthma attacks.

6. Make sure that you use your inhaler correctly, because utilizing it incorrectly will have no effect on your asthma attack. Should you use an inhaler, get your friendly pharmacist to show you the proper way to use this device to obtain the best relief.

Apart from these important tips, there are many more natural asthma remedies that work well in reducing the quantity of asthma attacks that you suffer.

Ok, well my dad has Asthma, he’s had it for a while, never really been so serious, never needed an inhaler, but for the last year its kinda gone south, he needs an inhaler a lot now, and this manitoba humidity is not good for him, were gonna move to saskatchewan (moocho hush hush) where its a little dryer. But until then I wanna know some helpful home remedies that actually work for Asthma.

Sounds crazy, but I know someone who used to put their head in a freezer when they felt an attack was coming on. It seemed to soothe him and thwart the attack.

Here’s a site that gives other natural remedies for asthma that may be helpful:

I found this home remedy for cough and it worked so well that I wanted to share it with everyone.

The first night I tried it, my son threw up a bunch of phlegm after 5 minutes which helped him get cleared up. About an hour and a half later, I gave him another teaspon before going to bed and within 5 minutes he was asleep (it usually takes him at least 30 minutes to do that)! Although he had the rapid shallow breathing due to his history of asthma, he didn’t cough during this first night and was able to sleep the entire night.

He only needed 2 nebulizer treatments to control his asthma symptoms*.

On the second night his asthma symptoms were gone and really slept well – even eliminated his snoring (a chronic problem due to stuffed sinuses).

By day 3, he had an occassional cough – not as frequent, severe or lingering like his previous experiences (lasts for at least 2 weeks). He was even able to play basketball and spend a day outside. I only had to give it to him in the morning and before going to bed.

I usually give it every 3 hours until cough is gone.

Here’s to green living and good health.

SAY NO TO DRUGS!

*Please do not take this as a cure to his asthma symptoms. I only used this to control his cough. I have been using other approaches to control his asthma and allergies all of which I believe have currently helped him recover quickly. Should his symptoms not improve with his doctor prescribed rescue medications, we are prepared to contact his doctor/take him to the ER as with previous experiences. I am hoping that he will no longer require these rescue asthma medications in the future.

My 8 year old suffers from asthma, coughing which is brought up with a cold and she coughs alot. Is there a good homeopathic remedy or something else thats better that I could give her that will stop the coughing? I tried Respiractin and that doesn’t seem to help her.

Don’t mess around with substances that could have no effect or a terrible side effect. You are not an herbalist, nor a doctor, which are your two choices at this point.

Asthma can come along slowly, with minor difficulty breathing and then out of the blue, your daughter will not be able to breathe, at all, and when that happens, if you don’t have something sure fire on hand to stop it cold, she will die. There will be nothing you can do about it and mouth to mouth doesn’t do any good if the lungs are closed or the throat is swollen.

I understand your point of view about homeopathic medicine, and share your inclination but an eight year old with asthma is not a suitable candidate for such treatment and any holistic provider would tell you the same thing.

So, try what you want but always keep an emergency inhaler on hand and also an epi kit for when the inhaler doesn’t work.

does anyone have any information about homeopathic asthma remedies – most of the people I"ve spoken to don’t know what they do or anything about them.

Eucalyptus has been used for centuries to help with asthma and healing problems. You should try getting either a plant or the essential oil and putting a little on ur chest or by ur nostrils. It should help quite a bit. Otherwise if ur asthma is sort of specific, herbs like Adhatoda vasica break the mucus plugs and dissolves them and makes it easy to cough them out of the lungs without much effort. And Shirish (albezzia lebbock) is good for removing toxins from within as well as for fighting allergic chemicals, pollen grains or chemicals causing allergy or irritation to the lungs. Or if ur looking for more of a anti-histamine sort of herb, you could try kantkara or solanum xanthocarpum, it’s a shrub, and the yellow berries are great for that sort of thing.

I have heard a lot about Papworth breathing technique which has improved the condition of many asthmatic patients. Can someone teach me this technique? I am also interested in knowing any natural remedies for this disease. Any dieatary do’s and don’t that help are also welcome.

Papworth breathing sounds like a fancy term for diaphragmatic breathing or exertional breathing maneuvers. Diaphragmatic breathing teaches the patient to use their diaphragm more during regular breathing, giving them more muscle power to breathe with. Exertional breathing is about using what you have efficiently. They are to assist people in living with chronic pulmonary disease and absolutely not to replace doctor prescribed medication. Having stronger breathing muscles won’t help you at all if your airways are clamped shut.

If you are looking to try some breathing exercises, your doctor or an asthma clinic should have a lot of resources available to help you. There are many ways to improve lung function through breathing in a specific way or through a device. But, there may be side effects that can be quite harmful to you.

Asthma is a chronic lung disease. It kills hundred of people every year. Taking care of yourself and following your doctor’s orders are the best way for asthmatics to live long and productive lives. There are no miracle cranberries or silver bullet breathing exercises.

Knowing why and when you have asthma attacks is probably the most important single thing that you can do on your own. I can predict when I’m going to have problems. Smog days, diesel exhaust, and stress/anxiety are my asthma triggers. By minimizing my exposure to these, I am problem free. Some detective work has gone a long way to help me not have scary asthma episodes anymore.

Having asthma is a pain in the butt enough, but I also have sinusitis and rhinitis; my sinuses are clogged all the time and I can barely breathe through my nose. It really sucks having to breathe loudly through one nostril or to mouth-breathe and I really hate side effects of my medications, does anyone happen to know any natural or herbal remedies for rhinitis and sinusitis?

My brother used to have the same problems as you!

Anyway, if you have asthma, you don’t want to use herbal remedies, because you could be allergic to the herbs and cause yourself even worse problems.

Try salt water rinsing (sniffing up luke warm salt water through your nose and letting it drain through your sinuses). This is a natural way to clear them out with no side effects. My brother got addicted to it! You can also take steamy showers and drink warm liquids. Spicey food will help too. If you have a lot of thick mucus, try taking Mucinex. There are NO side effects, and it will thin your secretions so that they will drain more easily.
