I have a lab mutt who is about a year and a half old. She hates baths, although they do seem to help (my vet said she is alleric to the pollen that gets on her skin). She does not have fleas. Antihistamines haven’t worked. Cortisone shots have proved helpful, but I don’t want to keep giving her steroids. Any suggestions?
She eats high quality lamb and rice food and gets daily omega 3 oils.

My husband is an alternative medicine veterinarian, so your problem is one we are commonly treating. Steriod injections have a number of undesirable side effects, so I don’t blame you for wanting to avoid them.

There’s a company on the west coast called Animal’s Apawthecary, and they carry a natural supplement called Detox Blend. The dogs receive a dose 2-3 times daily, either directly into the mouth or on their food, and it really seems to help with the itchies. They also just developed a new supplement called Spring Tonic, made more for the seasonal allergies than the dogs who have year-round allergies.

We’ve also found that acupuncture can really eleviate problems. They often need treatments once a week for four or five weeks in order to get things under control. I’ve really some some tremendous results, and I think it’s worth a shot.

There should be a website for the AHVMA (American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association) to help you locate local doctors. Good luck with this problem – I hope this helps.

I have tried everything from Allegra to Claritin to Zyrtec. I’ve been on the shots for years. Nothing works :( I’ve heard about several non-Western treatments like acupuncture but have never tried it. Also, I have the rings around my eyes from allergies as well. Dermatologist said he can’t prescribe anything. Does anyone know a way to get rid of that as well? Thanks for your help in advance. God bless.

Not sure what kind of allergies you have, but I have had terrible seasonal allergies in fall and early summer since I moved 4 years ago. They got so bad last summer that I couldn’t even speak. I too tried several different meds, I never thought I was going to find one that worked and didn’t have awful side effects, but I finally did. I finally had great success with combined treatment of zyrtec and a nasacort nasal spray. The nasacort has a cortisol steroid that is supposed to reduce inflammation and make it easier to breathe. (I’ve also had an oral corticosteroid prescribed in combo with the allergy meds) Have you tried any sort of spray? I know they make spray forms of allergy meds such as nasanex(sp?), you might check into that. Sorry this has been such an ordeal for you, it’s rough on me for the short period that I get it every year, don’t give up…keep experimenting with the drugs that work for your allergies, every person is different. Good luck! Bless you ;)

I have been reading thet NAET will potentially cure you of allergies including cat allergies. Has anyone tried with positive or negative results?
Please no cat killing answers.

I am a licensed acupuncturist in Colorado, I have a few friends who use the NAET system and use the Bio-Set system (which is the "next generation" of NAET). I’ve used parts of it’s protocols before for many allergies, but I have yet to see it be truly effective long-term for cat allergies. I have been treated 4 times with NAET for cat allergies and it seldom lasts more than six months. BUT, six months free of allergies is better than daily drugging.

Find a few practitioners in your area and get the success rates and see if they have patients who will allow you to find out how well it works – ask for positive and negative results. The more honest they are about positive AND negative results, the better the practitioner.
