I just found out I have asthma. My problem is that my enhaler I received does not seem to be working. I wake up at least three times in the middle of the night barely breathing, I feal as if I am slowly suffocating. It is so bad at times I almost can not control my bladder. Please Help.

It sounds like you are not appropriately medicated yet. You need more than just a rescue inhaler. (I’m assuming you’re taking Albuterol and not buying Primatene mist from the store. Do NOT use Primatene or any other over the counter asthma remedy).

Waking up 3 times a night is totally unacceptable. Make an appointment with your doctor and tell him/her exactly what is happening. You also need to be prescribed some sort of steroidal such as Flovent or Asthmacort. It is also possible that you have allergy induced asthma (do you have animals in the house) and would benefit from a daily allergy pill such as Singular.

I have been asthmatic all of my life and was in your situation at one point. I just worked with my doctor until we got my prescriptions right. I’m fine now. Just get that appointment scheduled and get to a professional. Asthma attacks should be taken seriously and you should not have to spend one more night like this.

I sleep sitting up, I have taken all carpeting out of house and have tile, I also have and ionic breeze filter. I only use my inhaler once every 2 or three weeks

You must consult whomever prescribed the inhaler for you right away, no joke, either the dose is sub therapeutic or have not been taught how to use it correctly, and if you are not using a spacer device this is certainly the case. Here is a good guideline with illustrations: but ask your M.D. to Rx a spacer to ensure medication goes to your lungs not your mouth….http://familydoctor.org/online/famdocen/home/common/asthma/medications/040.html

My son was born with asthma/bronchitis, and it has always helped to have the head of the bed raised, you can do this with something under the legs and if this isn’t possible try raising the mattress itself with a large folded up comforter/blanket, you can also try sleeping with extra pillows, and make sure they are not "down" (feather) pillows. You can eliminate any stuffed animals/throw pillows/carpeting, this will help keep the dust down to a minimum, also vacuum everything on a regular basis. You should ask your Doctor if a humidifier will help and keep it running while you sleep. Tell you Doctor that your inhaler isn’t working for you, there are many kinds available, and ask about your bladder problem, don’t wait till it gets out of hand, your medications may be reacting on you with unwanted side-effect’s. I have also stayed away from "dryer sheets" as they have a scent that lingers on your clothes/linens ect…and triggers breathing problems, and we have always used laundry detergent without dyes/scents, like Arm & Hammer or one for Sensitive Skin which has helped. You may also benefit from a "Nebulizer"(breathing machine), which involves a few minutes of your time but will make you feel better. Hope this helped you a little bit. Please take care.

If you are this bad, you need to see your doctor
or go the ER ASAP. Do NOT depend on ONLY home remedies. If home remedies helped, then why would we need a doctor and his/her advice.

My asthma was so bad that I have a Nebulizer machine at home and had use it 4x a day. Why am I better now? My doctor put me on a daily regemin.

Asthma is SERIOUS!!!. People die from it every day because they do not seek or take their doctor’s advice.
