You can’t cure asthma but you can reduce the affects by making sure he stays warm and his lungs stay open by drinking warm fluids. And when he gets home have him take a bath or sit in the shower and fill him lungs with the warm steam. Here are some home remedies.

"Exercise-induced asthma is different from the typical asthma that is triggered by allergens or irritants. My advice to you is breathing through the nose and not the mouth will help warm and humidify the air before it enters the airways, protecting the delicate lining of the airways and if exercising during cold weather, wear a scarf over your mouth and nose, so that the air breathed in is warm and easier to inhale. Recommended activities and sports include: baseball, biking leisurely, football, golfing, hiking, short-distance track and field etc. "

You can’t cure asthma but you controlled it, the inhaler is not a asthma treatment you should only use it if you have an attack.
Monitor your lung function using a peak flow meter, lung function decreases before symptoms of an asthma attack – usually about two to three days prior. If the meter indicates the peak flow is down by 20 percent or more from your usual best effort, an asthma attack is on its way.
You need to use meds to prevent the attacks and keep your asthma controlled. talk to your doctor to see whats the best option for you, and keep playing soccer, it is my favorite sport too
