Asthma has gained widespread attention due to its recent increase in prevalence in children. Research shows that it is affecting 5.5 million children and 17 million people in the United States alone. Asthma is a chronic or long-lasting disease. It is suggested that a child has a chance to outgrow asthma when he or she reaches a certain age. But there is always a chance of recurrence. Today, there is still no cure for asthma. There are only treatments. Science continues to research in hopes of finding a cure for it. At the moment, there are existing medications and a few home remedies to help you alleviate your asthma symptoms.

Keep in mind that before you go out and try any of the alternative medications or treatments, proper research must always be done to ensure your safety. If you are really interested in trying out any, search for all the information that you can about the technique and then ask your doctor if it will work for you.

Here are a few of the most commonly-used alternative medicines.

Acupuncture: Acupuncture involves stimulating specific points of the body with long needles in order to improve health and well being. Studies using acupuncture to treat asthma have been mixed, some showing benefits and others not.

Herbal Medicine: Herbalism is the use of plants or plant products in the treatment of medical conditions like asthma. The theory behind this is that there may be plants that have specific properties which can control inflammation and relieve asthma symptoms. While some of the herbal medications that exist may work, some actually have side effects or may not work well along with the prescribed medications that are given.

Breathing Exercises: Breathing techniques such as the Buteyko Method and the Pranayama helps alleviate asthma symptoms by power of breathing alone. The Buteyko Method was recently accepted as an effective asthma-relieving practice.

Homeopathy: Homeopathy is an alternative approach to medicine. It is believed that any natural substance can benefit the health if they are prepared in special ways and used in small amounts.

There are actually a lot more alternative techniques that are available, but as with any alternative medication, it should be treated as a supplement rather than a replacement. When looking for an alternative medication it is important to keep in mind one thing above all else; your safety, never try to go ahead without your doctors input.

Here are a few of the most commonly-used alternative treatments.

Acupuncture: Acupuncture involves piercing your body with long, thin needles at specific points. Acupuncture is a treatment that is proven to work for some diseases without scientific explanations. For asthma, it still needs further research.

Herbalism: Herbalism is the use of various plants or plant products, or concoctions of it, for treating illnesses like asthma. It is believed that the herbs have components to help relieve the inflammation that causes the asthma symptoms. Some herbs may work but may have side-effects. Some may conflict with the prescribed medications.

Breathing Exercises: Breathing techniques such as the Buteyko Method and the Pranayama teaches the asthmatic to alleviate asthma symptoms on their own by controlling their breathing. The Buteyko Method was accepted by the medical community as a proven asthma-relieving practice.

Homeopathy: Homeopathy is an alternative approach to medicine. It is believed that any natural substance can benefit the health if they are prepared in special ways and used in small amounts.

More alternative treatments are out there for your disposal. So far, the ones mentioned above are those most commonly-used for asthma treatment. If youd like to try alternative medicine, consulting your doctor first is a must. Understand that alternative treatments are added supplements to your existing prescriptions. They should never replace your current medication.

There are a lot of medications and therapies out there when it comes to asthma. Some are intended to be used during an attack and some intended for the prevention of an attack. Aromatherapy falls into the prevention side of things. During an attack you should know that aromatherapy must never be considered as a controller medication. Irritated lungs have a tendency to worsen if not given proper medication right away.

Upon using the method aromatherapy for the first time as a preventive measure for asthma, the need of intensive research and advice of the doctor on which essential oils will used is suggested. Their advice will be beneficial for you in choosing the right extract to be used. A lot of oils that is available in the market today may not be advisable for asthmatics.

One of the good things about aromatherapy is its variety and the number of ways that you can easily incorporate its use into your daily life. In starting out you will first need to choose your carrier oil, this will serve as your base (such as water for example). For asthmatics, primrose is the one of the widely used carrier oil because of its antispasmodic effects which is effective for controlling muscular spasms.

Some examples of essential oils that can be beneficial to asthmatics are; Melissa which is good for reducing palpitations and asthma, Pine as it is good for preventing infections in the respiratory tract, Friars Balsalm which is considered to be the most powerful lung tonic and bronchial dilator in the world of aromatherapy, Eucalyptus which is also antispasmodic and expectorant, Frankencense and a lot more.

There are a lot of essential oils used in asthma. The only drawback is some of them may have components that can cause other types of irritation for you. You skin may be too sensitive to some so you might have some time to getting used to oil/water proportions. The best way to test skin sensitivity to an essential oil is apply it behind your ear.

Essential oils for aromatherapy, along with appropriate research, are widely used to prevent asthma attacks. If you are unsure as to what its possible effects to you are, ask for advice from your physician. Once you are satisfied, look for the oils that you can use with the help from your aromatherapist.

Asthma is a respiratory disorder which is the result of the bodys overreaction to a certain allergen or irritant. Since this condition is recurring and long lasting, no cure has been found or made at the moment. The good news is that more and more individuals are finding asthma relief without having to depend too much on their medication by taking natural remedies. The advantage of using natural asthma remedies is that they can be easily found and bought, cheap, and can work particularly well in minimizing your attacks. However one thing to keep in mind is that even though natural remedies can treat the symptoms well, it is also a good idea to keep an emergency inhaler close by in addition to the treatment. Here are some of the natural remedies that you might be interested in:

Be wary of what you eat: Try to consume foods and supplements rich in antioxidants as this will help reduce the amount of free radicals in your body thereby reducing the amount of respiratory issues which may occur. Sources may include cacao, citrus fruits, green tea, broccoli and others. Avoid fatty acids such as shellfish, egg yolk as well as other types of meat containing archidonic acid which may cause inflammation in many allergy sufferers.

Beware of food additives: Food additives including metabisulfite and MSG can trigger asthma. While MSG or monosodium glutamate is used on a lot of foodstuff nowadays, metabisulfite can be found in beer wine, shrimp, and dried fruits, particularly apricots.

Stay away from smoke: While this is an unwritten rule, it is often neglected. Asthmatics consider smoke as their number one enemy. Smog is even a prime suspect in the increasing prevalence of respiratory infections in children today. If you are an asthmatic, exposure to smoke will worsen your condition.

Listen to your body: The best way to fight asthma is to prevent it from surfacing. Learn to recognize the warning signs that you will soon have an asthma attack. Do not ignore them. When you feel discomfort, act right away so you can ward off the attack.

There are a number of products and techniques being developed for alternative and natural asthma treatment. Seek your doctors advice about the alternatives you may be interested in. Only they can tell you if they are beneficial or not. If they are, they may even provide further tips to maximize effectiveness.

Asthma is a chronic condition characterized mainly by shortness of breath. This is due to a variety of factors that include narrowing or inflammation of the airways, and accumulation of mucus. Asthma can be developed through different factors, some of which are: exposure to environments that cause respiratory infections, and it can be inherited.

Asthma is normally a steady-state type of condition. The onset of it where the airways become narrowed is called an asthma attack, episode, or flare up. Most asthma attacks are due to inadvertently inhaling airborne triggers. These particles irritate the lungs or airways upon contact. Thus, the reaction causes the asthmatic to experience the shortness of breath. Most of the time, a whistling sound known as wheezing, is heard.

Asthma symptoms are also present in the long list of allergic reactions. A non-asthmatic may experience an asthma attack upon accidental inhaling of an allergen. Allergic reactions typically involve swelling; most often in the face. Severe allergic reactions may cause internal swelling that reach the larynx. If this happens, breathing is impaired. Allergic reactions may also cause mucus release in the lungs. All of these symptoms are collectively called allergic asthma.

Molds, pollen, pets, and dust mites are well known asthma triggers. These same substances are the most-common of all inhaled allergens. With allergy, trigger avoidance is a must. Since asthma has other triggers, allergen avoidance is not enough for asthmatics. Asthma-exclusive triggers include smoke, fumes, and strong odors.

Medications for allergic asthma are similar to those in bronchial asthma. These include fast-acting bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory medicines. Epinephrine is mainly used for allergy, but is administered for severe cases of asthma attacks. Immunotherapy, the closest to a cure to allergy as we can get, is also recommended for asthma. Note that immunotherapy does not work for food allergies. If youre thinking about it for curing your asthma, check with your doctor first.

Asthma is the chronic respiratory condition where the lungs get inflamed and the airways get narrowed. The constriction of the airways causes shortness of breath, chest tightness and/or pains, coughing, and wheezing. Wheezing is a subject of much misconception. While wheezing is present in mild to acute asthma, it may be absent in severe asthma since the airflow would be hindered enough for any wheezing sound to be produced.

Asthma has a steady state. In this steady state, the asthmatic can continue living a normal life. Occasional nighttime coughing may occur, but nothing that an inhaler cannot take care of. But asthma, when left unchecked, gets worse without being known. The asthmatic may feel perfectly fine without realizing that the airways are starting to constrict; inhaling airborne irritants speeds up the process of asthma exacerbation.

Asthma triggers include, but are not limited to, smoke, dust, pollen, strong odors, fumes, and molds. Most of these can be avoided. But there will be a time that exposure to them is inevitable. This brings about an asthma attack, wherein the symptoms are worse than those in its steady state. Asthma attacks are generally characterized by wheezing.

The asthma attack is the event where the narrowing of the airways occurs to a point that it makes it hard to breathe. To relieve asthma episodes, inhalers are commonly used. These inhalers contain and deliver quick-acting bronchodilators. Bronchodilators are substances that relax and widen the airways; as the words dilate and bronchi imply. Basically, they normalize breathing.

Fast-acting bronchodilators often come in aerosol, powder, or mist form. They are more popular in those forms than in pills because inhaled bronchodilators can target the lungs directly. Even hospitals use nebulizers that deliver bronchodilator medication to relieve a severe asthma attacks. For this reason, inhalers are often referred to as an asthmatics best friend.
