It used to be if you wanted to find out what you were allergic to you had to undergo a long series of tests that could take weeks or months. If you were allergic to something unusual or rare it could take years or, more commonly, you never would find out.
If your allergies were seasonal, they probably disappeared before the testing clinic found an answer and you would give up on the clinic testing and go back to life as before. Much of that procedure today has been speeded up and is more straightforward but if you are being checked for allergies there will probably still be several types of tests performed.
Now this all relies upon what medical history you have as well. There are three methods that a clinic or hospital can determine if you have allergies. These are a skin test, elimination test, and a blood test. Certainly each of these has its advantages and disadvantages and an esteemed doctor will be able to determine which test you require to begin with for the best effectiveness.
Skin Test
The test used most often is a skin test. To do this test, a small amount of the allergen is applied on your skin. Allergen is what is medically known for causing your allergy. Frequently, the allergen is put on your forearm however; it may be done on your back or upper arm as well. Then the skin where the allergen was placed is irritated by scratching it with a needle. This enables the allergen to get under your skin. If you are allergic, then you will have an allergic reaction in less than 10 to 15 minutes. Often the reaction appears as redness on the skin, itching and swelling, however testers must be careful with skin tests because in rare situations the reaction may be strong and has caused respiratory problems for the patient.
A different kind of skin test is the intradermal allergy test. This test includes using a small needle to inject the allergen underneath the skin. Skin tests are often used to pin point things in the air that you breathe in that might be the cause of your allergy to insect and animal bites as well.
Elimination Test
A second type of allergy testing is called elimination testing. This is most often used to identify food and diet allergies. In a very controlled environment, various foods are either added or removed from your diet and your reaction is monitored. Often the food is disguised in some fashion to prevent psychological factors from interfering with the test. Sometimes if you think you are allergic to something you abnormally influence the result. Obviously, this method is very time consuming and can only be used if the reactions are relatively mild.
Blood Test
The third and perhaps the best method of allergy testing is the blood test. As the name implies, this involves taking a small sample of your blood and sending it off for laboratory testing. The lab procedure is complicated but basically, they will expose your blood to various allergens. If you are allergic, your blood will create what are called IgE antibodies to fight off the allergen. Depending on what kind of IgE antibodies are created and how many are created the lab can both identify your allergy and tell you how severe it is.
RAST and UniCAP are the two standard kinds of modern blood testing for allergies. UniCAP is nearly an entirely automated process that can search for several 100 allergens and will even assign a number from 1 to 6 to distinguish the severity of the allergic reaction. The main downfall of blood testing is it requires specialized equipment. Normally your clinic or hospital will have to send your blood sample away and will not get results back for many weeks.
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes damage to the small intestines. As the small intestines become more damaged, the person gradually loses the ability to absorb nutrients by the small intestines.
Other names for celiac disease are celiac sprue, nontropical sprue, and gluten sensitive enteropathy. When the person with select disease eats gluten, the immune system reacts by attacking the cells of the small intestines.
Celiac disease can cause chronic diarrhea, constipation, recurrent abdominal pain, fatigue, and unexplained changes in weight. Irritability and depression can be caused by celiac disease. In children, celiac disease can cause growth delays.
Infertility in men and women and miscarriages can be caused by celiac disease. Anemia and vitamin K deficiencies can be caused by celiac disease.
Celiac disease can cause changes in the mouth. A person with celiac disease may frequently develop canker sores in the mouth. Loss of tooth enamel or a discoloration of the teeth can be caused by celiac disease.
The symptoms of celiac disease can be severe or the person may have no symptoms. The substance that triggers the damage to the small intestines, gluten, is a protein that is present in rye, wheat, and barley.
Celiac disease is most commonly diagnosed during childhood, late adolescence, or young adulthood. Sometimes, a case of celiac disease may go undetected for several years if not decades.
The cause of celiac disease is considered to be genetic. A person’s risk can be determined by genetic testing.
A blood test can be done to confirm a diagnosis of celiac disease. A small bowel biopsy may be performed to look for damage and inflammation caused by celiac disease.
People with celiac disease often treat this disorder by following a gluten-free diet to lessen the damage on the small intestines. This is the only effective treatment for celiac disease.
In addition to grains, and can be found in a variety of food and nonfood products. Celiac disease can be found in frozen french fries and in some medications.
Many people with celiac disease have other sensitivities and allergies. They may have a food allergy or lactose intolerance which can cause some digestive symptoms to continue even after the person is following the gluten-free diet.
Home remedies for dry skin are pretty effective and cost much less than commericla products. Below youll find a list of the best tips for dry skin with safe and easy to use ingredients and products. While even the best treatment for dry skin may not always be a cure, many people do find relief from bumpy dry skin using the affordable dry skin care tips outlined on this site.
Best Treatment For Dry Skin
One of the most common dry skin causes is soap. Most soap products are not pH balanced and can cause dry cracking skin. Your body and facial cleanser creams should always have a pH balance of 7. Dont purchase a cleanser if you dont know the pH level. So one of the most important home remedies for dry skin is to use a pH balanced cleanser on your face and body.
The pH measures the how acidic or alkaline your cleanser is. Normal healthy skin is usually in the range of 4.2 to 5.6 and a good facial cleanser cream should also be within this range. At this level, the acid mantle (the skin surface) is in good condition and is able to protect the skin from dehydration and other damaging elements of the environment like wind, sun or bacteria. A pH below 7 is considered more acidic and above 7 is more alkaline.
One of the best things you can do to cure dry skin is to massage emu oil into the skin. Emu oil has been around for thousands of year and has been used by the Aborigines. They had to brave the harsh sun of Australia and knew that not only can emu oil moisturize the skin; it has been known to heal and protect it. You should apply the Emu Oil each time you wash your skin and every night before you go to bed. Its best to apply the oil while the skin is still damp, not wet, and just slightly damp like right after drying it with a towel.

Lung damage somtimes occurs with out symptoms, and if there are symptoms they may be ignored.
COPD is most common in smokers
It is a tough one to manage with tools and drugs modern medicine has to offer.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a term used to categorize a number of lung diseases like emphysema, chronic bronchitis and chronic asthma.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, with 80-90 percent of cases being caused by smoking.
Chronic bronchitis is the inflammation and eventual scarring of the lining of the bronchial tubes.
When the bronchi are inflamed and/or infected, less air is able to flow to and from the lungs.
COPD is a progressive condition characterized by airflow obstruction, where the ability to empty air out of the lungs is impaired.
COPD includes emphysema, bronchitis or a combination of both conditions.
Effective delivery of drugs to the sites of disease in the lung is an important consideration, and there is the need for validateing and monitoring techniques in early clinical studies with new therapies
The use of inhaled corticosteroids is now recommended for the treatment of patients with frequent exacerbations.
Inflammation, which plays a part in the pathogenesis of COPD, appears to also play a role in the nutritional impairment as levels of tumor necrosis factor are increased in the circulation is one of a variety of mediators released by the activated inflammatory cells implicated in the pathogenesis of COPD.
Inflammation then causes scarring. And the funtion is reduced and the lungs become an ideal breeding ground for bacterial infections.
Medications may reduce or relieve symptoms.
Lifestyle changes, such as doing breathing exercises, and taking rest breaks, may help reduce symptoms.
Medications for patients can be put into two broad categories: acute and long-term. Acute medications treat bronchospasm, while long-term medications help reduce inflammation and mucus secretion.
Chronic lung disease is one of the largest problems faced by the developed world and biologists are at the cutting edge of applying the latest techniques to study these conditions.
Studies will provide an overview of the tools and computational resources that are currently being employed in the chronic inflammatory lung diseases.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease actually refers to two different diseases, chronic bronchitis and emphysema, which often occur together.
The biggest risk factor is cigarette smoking. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a common disabling condition with a high mortality.
Doctors will run a series of tests that are geared toward testing the capacity and the efficiency of the lungs.
Once the severity of the condition is determined, it maybe possible to put together a treatment regimen that will help to slow the development and perhaps provide some amount of relief at the same time.
General practitioners must be educated about how to recognize COPD and institute the most appropriate therapy. The Global Initiative for Lung Disease plays an important role in raising awareness
New research points to the idea that irritable bowel syndrome may be caused by an overgrowth of bad bacteria in the intestines. It seems that some foods favour the spread of these bad bacteria and one way to reduce their population is to identify which foods support their growth.
It important to keep a food and symptoms diary as this is the only way you will be able to track the specific foods that trigger your IBS Symptoms.
The list below shows 2 known foods that definitely trigger IBS symptoms in many people. They are:
1. Gluten: Is a protein found in a lot of grains and that includes but not restricted to wheat, oats, rye, spelt, rye and barley. The first thing you need to do is go on a gluten free diet for at least 2 weeks.
This means you have to pay very close attention to the foods you are eating, read food labels and even read the ingredients in over the counter medicines because some of the foods and medications that you least expect may contain gluten.
You should see a significant improvement in your symptoms once you eliminate this protein from your diet.
2. Coffee especially when combined with sugar and milk. As an irritable bowel syndrome suffer myself, I have experienced some of the symptoms of IBS e.g bloating, stomach noises, flatulence, spastic contractions of the colon and stomach cramps.
I noticed a significant improvement in my symptoms the very next day I stopped drinking coffee.
You see coffee and sugar are both acidic foods and they will increase the acidity of your stomach. If you suffer from IBS, it is important that your stomach is not too acidic. One of the ways to achieve this is to reduce the amount of acidic foods you eat and consume more foods that leave an alkaline residue in your body.
We have briefly touched on two foods you should avoid at all costs if you suffer from Irritable bowel syndrome, but there are even more foods you need to avoid with ibs.
Do you know what happens when you vacuum? If you have the wrong kind of filtering system tons of tiny dust particles are stirred up in the air. These can cause allergic reactions like runny eyes, runny noses, and congestion. But there’s a filter system called High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) that can trap microscopic dust so that they don’t just swirl around and land again to repeat the process.
The dirty little secret is that the primary cause of allergic reactions is dust mite poop. Sorry to be so blunt but those itchy eyes, runny nose, and congestion are revved up by indoor contaminants that most people don’t want to admit exist much less understand.
The HEPA filtration helps mightily. But here is the rub. If you decide to purchase a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter system then make sure that you are getting the real McCoy. The real thing has to be certified. And in a marvelously bureaucratic sleight of hand the certifiers came up with an absolute and a ” well, sort of ” HEPA filter.
To be certified as a true HEPA filter is must be tested rigorously to ensure that it snares particulates down to .3 microns 99.97 percent of the time.
Here is where it gets a little confusing so bear with me. The other “sort of” is called a HEPA Type filter. No need to certify this one because it is not absolute or true. That one only needs to capture those huge 1 micron particles 85 to 90 percent of the time. Those are those dust mite droppings we were discussing earlier.
Because they are so similar in appearance, you have got to examine them closely if you want a certified HEPA. It will be more expensive, have a certification number right on it and will tell you that it grabs down to .3 micron particulates 99.97 percent of the time.
If you have got allergies and you want a clean house that doesnt make them flare up then consider the absolute or true HEPA. Your runny eyes, runny nose and coughing chest will thank you for it.
This is the requisite first post for this new blog. From here on out we will try to focus on asthma and allergies, as the name suggests.
I myself have been a lifetime sufferer from both asthma and resperitory allergies, and have long searched for information to help me breath easier. Here we will be sharing that information with you, along with information about causes and other things you can do.
We hope you find this to be a valuable resource and we hope you come back often.
